Day 1 in Milano

Since I have so much to say about my weekend excursion to Milano, I am going to have to give you a day by day playback...

The trip actually started off horrible for me. I think I got food poisioning the day we left and felt the sickest I have EVER felt in my life...I just wanted my mama but I wasn't going to let that stop me from traveling to Italy! So our trip started at 5PM Thursday night. We got on the train to head to Gatwick airport and arrived around 6PM. Our flight departed the airport at around 8:45 but the flight was super short (about 1.5 hours).

When we got into Milano, we took a bus and then a short taxi drive to our hotel (oddly enought it was called the Hotel London!). We arrived around 11ish I think (I can't really remember much from this day) and checked in to the hotel. At first we were a little creeped out because the people didn't seem the nicest, but I think we were all just exhausted from a long day. Everyone went to bed pretty early as we wanted to wake up around 8:30 to start our 1 full day in Milan!

Day 2 started out with a delicious breakfast of a chocolate pastry and a fruit smoothie. It was a little spendy though because we ate in instead of take away but it was still worth it! At breakfast we decided we would take a bus tour of the city that day and also sign up for a trip to Lake Como for Saturday (I will tell you all about that in the next blog)! Take a look at some pictures from the morning of day 1!
Kirstin's dad sent us a list of things we needed to try in Italy
1) Pastry (check)
2) Gelato (check)
3) Pizza (check)
4) Pasta (check)
5) Italian cappacino (check)
Thanks Mr. Anderson for all the suggestions!

I swear I own more than 1 outfit! We just always have on our jackets :)

Pretty little park in Milano

The bus tour took us all around the city and showed us some of it's popular sites. Finally we reached the destination stop of the Duomo...this is the big Cathedral you see in all the google images of Milan. It was AMAZING! It looked fake and it was much bigger than I expected. We took a bunch of pictures outside of it and then went inside...to our surprise, we were allowed to take pictures inside as well. My pictures don't do it justice but it helps you get an idea of how amazing this buidling really is.

Duomo

Felt so lucky to be standing in front of this

These crazy street vendors shoved birdseed into their hands to the pidgeons would flock to them...those street vendors annoyed me so bad!

Takes my breath away

After the Duomo, Kirsten, Monica and I walked all over Milan to find the building that housed "The Last Supper." It took us a long while before we finally found us...unfortunatly the tickets were booked for the day. The lady at the front desk had her "bitchy" pants on and said we couldn't purchase tickets for the next day in person-we had to call instead and that of course did not work. Monica had her mom search online and the tickets were sold out until Wednesday so that was a little sad. At least we found it though.

Now by this time we were pretty freakin exhausted from all the walking we were doing. We decided to head back to the main street by our hotel and find some GELATO! Let me just tell you, this was the highlight of my trip! Gelato is the best thing that ever happened to me :) We found this cool little place that had tons of different flavors and the best waffle cones ever! It was even super cheap-it only cost us 2.80 euro! For my first ever Gelato cone I had the flavor called "Kinder" which was vanilla mixed with pieces of Kinder chocolate eggs. It was sooooo amazing!!

After the Gelato, we were all pretty satisfied with ourselves and decided to head back to the hotel to freshen up before dinner. I fell asleep for a little bit which was probably good because I woke up feeling a tiny bit better (don't know if it was the Gelato or the nap)! Then we met the other girls and headed over to a restaurant on the main street for some Italiano Pizza. When we walked in, we saw some people with pizza's but they didn't look too big so we all decided to order our own...the waitress must have thorught "Stupid Americans" because when the pizza arrived, they were HUGE! They could barely fit all the pizzas on the table! I ordered a mozzerella and grilled veggie pizza and could hardly finish half of it...but it was delicious. (Say it with me in an Italian accent..."Mozzerella"). Have a look at our delicious food from the day!

Gelato #1-Kinder!

Little wine jug that cost 4 euro at dinner!

See how big the pizzas are...we all ordered our own!

My pizza :)

The damage done to my pizza!

Mine and Kirsten's leftovers...thought we would save it for breakfast

Of course, we saved room for Gelato after dinner and headed out to find a place that would still be open at 10PM. It seemed like everything had the strangest hours in Milan. Things would open early then close in the afternoon and then open again later. We found a little shop right across from the Duomo (seeing that at night was incredible!) and got our 2nd cone of Gelato for the day. This time I just had a yoghurt flavor and it was spectacular! This was pretty much the only food I ate all day and I was finally starting to feel a lot better. Our belly's were full yet we were still so happy and content from eating this amazing food in this beautiful city. After the food, we headed back to the hotel for a relaxing night since our bus for Lake Como was scheduled to leave at 9AM the next morning! Check out the blog for day 2 to hear about that trip :)

Ciao-
